My Garmin 305 won't turn on or power up

My heart just about stopped today when I went to use my Garmin 305 and it was completely dead. I depend a lot on my heart rate monitors while I train. I tried a couple of different chargers and it wouldn't come to life. I left it on the charger for awhile hoping it just needed to charge. It still wasn't working an hour later. Luckily I found this tip on the gamin website:
http://www8.garmin.com/products/faq.jsp?product=010-00467-00

You have to hold down the "reset" and "mode" buttons simultaneously then push the on/off button while holding them. It powered right up and all is right in the world again!

free style fitness

By Selene Yeager
Prevention

There's no kinder, gentler place to work out than in the gravity-defying embrace of a pool of water. Swimming is easy on your joints, burns tons of calories, and makes you feel like a kid on summer vacation, all while giving you grown-up fitness and muscle tone.

Water is about 12 times as dense as air, so each stroke and kick through it is a mini strength-training exercise. When you swim, every muscle in your body is called into action as you push against the water's resistance. What's more, regular swimming can make you more flexible, something active women struggle with as they get older. Since you weigh only 10 to 15 percent of your land weight in the water, your arms and legs feel lighter and your range of motion increases as you move. Swimming also lengthens your body to its fullest potential, strengthening and stretching otherwise tight, shortened muscles.

The old myth that swimming doesn't burn off fat because your heart doesn't work as hard and your body hangs on to your excess "insulation" in the cool water is just that—a myth. True, your working heart rate can be reduced by as many as 17 beats—or by 10 to 15 percent of your normal working rate on land. But that's because the force of the water actually assists your circulation in helping your heart do its job, and your body temperature is lower in the water, which automatically lowers your heart rate. But that doesn't mean you're not getting a workout. Your lungs actually work harder against the pressure of the water, and your muscles put in overtime keeping you afloat. As a result, you're burning as many calories and conditioning your heart just as well as you would if you were doing most dry land exercises. Your lungs are getting an even better workout.

Swimming is the best way to boost a sagging butt. You see those tight buns in the tank suits of pro swimmers because every kick is powered by the glutes; every lap firms and lifts those muscles. Keep up this butt-building and fat-burning exercise, and you just might find yourself breaking out that thong...at least for private viewings!

* Excerpted from Perfectly Fit by Selene Yeager (Rodale Inc., 2001).

Getting Started
The first thing you need is a place to swim. For most women, the easiest solution is the local YWCA. For a minimal membership fee, most health clubs will allow you access to their pools. And general lap-swimming times are plentiful.

You'll also need a suit. This is the point where many women say, "Thanks, but no thanks." Relax; we're not talking about a flesh-flashing, butt-baring bikini. We're talking about an athletic, supportive swimsuit. You can even find boy-cut styles that look like shorts. Still feeling body-conscious? One trip to the pool will cure you. You won't see a bunch of bathing beauties; you'll see adult women who look just like you, who are there to get in some laps and get on with their lives.

In addition to a swimsuit, you'll need some other accessories, including:

Goggles
Because they're cheap and they save your eyes from the irritating effects of chlorine, swimming goggles are a must. You'll also see better while you're doing your laps.

Swim Cap
Although it's not a necessity (though some public pools request it), a swimming cap is a definite nicety. If your hair is long, a cap will keep it from tangling. No matter what the length, it'll protect your tresses from the chemicals in the water, which can dry or discolor hair. It's a good idea to look for a silicone cap. It won't pull your hair like a plain rubber one would.

The Usuals
Don't forget a towel for drying off and a water bottle for keeping yourself hydrated (yes, you can get dehydrated in the water).

If swimming becomes your sport, aim to get to the pool at least 3 days a week. Beginners should try to swim 4 to 6 laps in a 25-yard pool. More experienced swimmers can float into the 8- to 10-lap range. And the female fishes in the crowd can shoot for 20 laps.

Tips and Techniques
Swimming used to be the sport that kept me out of triathlons because I sank like a stone and struggled just to stay afloat. One day, I got a few pointers from a pro, and my life has never been the same. By using the right technique, you'll go faster, feel lighter, swim more efficiently, and have more fun.

Roll Like an Otter
The more efficient your stroke, the longer you'll be able to swim. The secret is reducing your number of strokes while making maximum progress with every pull. Learn from the aquatic animals, and roll through the water. Contrary to appearances, swimming is not about twirling your arms and kicking your legs as fast and hard as you can. In reality, your power comes from your hips. As you move through the water, instead of just turning your head for air, roll your whole body, keeping your head in line with your spine, so that your mouth comes out of the water. Breathe, then roll back to the other side with the next stroke.

Streamline Yourself
Your head should be mostly down, with the top of your forehead leading the way. This position helps keep your hips up and is less fatiguing to your neck than holding your head high and looking ahead.

Stay to the Right
If you swim during prime hours, like morning and evening, there's a good chance that you'll have to share a lane with other people. Swim on the right-hand side of the lane, just like you would drive. If someone behind you is swimming faster and making you nervous, stop at the end of the lane and let her through.

Rinse Before and After
Pool chemicals can leave your skin as dry as the Sahara. Avoid this irritation by rinsing off in the facility's shower right before you get in the pool and then soaping up with a moisturizing cleanser and applying a body lotion after you're done. If you're afraid that chlorine will turn your hair to straw, use a chlorine-removing shampoo such as Nexxus Clarifying Shampoo after every swim.

Switch Strokes
Most swimmers do their laps freestyle, because that's the classic swimming stroke we learn as kids and it's the easiest to pick up. But you can work your muscles in new ways and improve your overall conditioning by playing around with a variety of strokes. Flip over and try the backstroke for a few laps. Learn the breaststroke or sidestroke. Your body will appreciate the new movements, and you'll be less likely to get bored.

Swimming Stats
Here's what you can expect from 30 minutes of a water workout.

Calories Burned
255 (based on a 140-pound woman)

Muscles Worked
Trapezius, rhomboids, pectorals, deltoids, glutes, and hip flexors

Psychological Benefits
Cutting through the water is sensual, stress relieving, and a welcome silencing of the usual workday noise.

2012 triathlon season game plan

This year 2 guys came out of no where and won just about every local triathlon in my age group of 35-39. Having seen them dominate so thoroughly I've realized next year I need to have my best season ever to be compete. They were so dominant that if you compared the 2 best races I've EVER had to what Marty & Brooks accomplished this year, those 2 great races of mine were about the equivalent to their average this season.

To try and compete with Marty & Brooks next year I've come up with a 5 part plan.
1) Most importantly I'll pray! God blesses those who keep Him 1st and foremost in their heart. Philippians 4:13- I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
2) I'm going to start doing more group rides with pure cyclists. If I can hang with roadies on the bike I can hang with anyone!
3) I'll be implementing more strength and core training to build more block busting speed!
4) I need to drop more weight. My goal weight for next season is 175 pounds.

In 2011 I had a good season. But honestly the only reason I've had decent races is because of my lower body weight. I've maintained 182 since June. 182 is 30-45 pounds less than my normal racing weight, this is the 1st time I've maintained 182 pounds since 1992 or 1993! I've probably said it a thousand times in my blog, "light is fast", but it wasn't until this year that I've been able to drop and maintain around my ideal race weight. I'm currently at 6.8% body fat. For me to drop another 7 pounds and get the kind of speed I'll be needing I'll have to get to 5% body fat, drop a little extra muscle from my upper body, and build a little more leg and core muscle.

I've decided to start my new diet regimen on the 1st day after Thanksgiving! That should give me plenty of time to drop the weight and build as much strength and speed as I can by my 1st A race in 2012. What that race may be, I have no idea. I've decided I wont race again until I'm able to replace my time trial bike that was totaled in September of this year.

yearly physical.....

I went in for my yearly physical last week. The blood test came back with two liver enzymes being very high. One of the tests would be high if it was in the mid 40’s, my results from that test came back in the high 40’s. The other test would be high if it was in the mid 30’s; my results were in the 460’s. I’m being sent for more specialized blood tests and an ultra sound of my liver this Tuesday.

I googled the results and found that the liver enzyme results can be high if:

-The test is a false positive. With how high my enzymes were the nurse who I scheduled a follow up test with claimed a false negative is highly unlikely.

Muscle damage. My liver enzyme tests may have been high if I had severe muscle damage. I had competed in an Ironman 3 weeks before my yearly physical. I’m hoping that the test results were high because my muscles hadn’t healed from a 15 hour Iron distance triathlon. The nurse who scheduled my follow up testing said it’s doubtful exercise caused the high results, but I’m hoping this was the reason.

Lung damage. I don’t know of any reason at all that my lungs had been damaged recently, so this one is doubtful.

Kidney damage. I had a couple days of over-eating before my yearly physical. I doubt binge eating could have caused high liver enzyme results, but my eating disorder causing health problems is always a fear of mine.

The most likely reason for high liver enzyme levels would be liver damage. I haven’t drank more than a couple drinks at a time since 2003, so drinking couldn’t have been a reason.

I’ve never done any drugs. I’m not on any medications.

One of the tests they will be doing on Tuesday is a hepatitis test. I seriously doubt I have hepatitis. I’ve never done a drug in my life, and I’ve been faithfully married to my wife since 2003. I was hospitalized in September for a cycling crash. I know it’s unlikely to get hepatitis from needles or other mistakes in a hospital, so I doubt I have hepatitis.

I go in for more tests on Tuesday to see what is up with my liver enzyme's. I’ll post here what the blood tests and ultra sound of my liver reveal.

If any of my blog readers out there of followers of Christ, I’d be forever grateful if you’d be willing to pray for me and my family. Thank you for all your support.

off season and P90-X

I've had the P90-X DVD's for a couple years and have never used them, my training schedule was to just too full with all the swimming, biking, and running. After a week of nan off season I've decided to give P90-X a try. I'm 1 week into it and am enjoying it so far, it's kicking my butt! During my workouts my muscles are shaking and I'm hitting muscle failure quickly. I usually wake up a little sore in my legs and so sore in my upper body that it's a struggle to even brush my teeth! I suspect that I'll get very quick gains from doing the P90-X routine because the workouts are so foreign to my body. Anytime someone switches their workouts around it shocks the body and it makes for great results. The no-bulk strength training and the plyometric aspects of the p90-X will help my triathlon racing later in the season.

Qualified for the 2012 Age Group national championships at The NutCracker triathlon: a race report

The Nutcracker triathlon was held this morning in Rio Rancho New Mexico. It was a Run-Bike-Swim at the Rio Rancho Aquatic Center. The bike course was an out-and-back (moderately hilly) 25K. The run was a hilly loop 5K course. The swim was a serpentine 400 meter swim, up/down one lane at a time.

The Nutcracker triathlon was RD’d by Mark Mico. Every time I race a multisport event put on by Mark Mico I’m amazed. His events are always extremely well organized and stress free events. The race results were posted online by the evening of the race. He always hands out the nicest age group awards of any local sprint. This year each and every athlete who placed top 3 in their AG received a wood plaque that had “The Nutcracker triathlon 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place division” on it. The registration fees of his events are always much cheaper than any other sprint distance races.

The night before the Nutcracker triathlon a storm covered New Mexico in a fine sheet of snow. With all the snow and ice that had dropped just hours before sun came up I was afraid the bike portion of the triathlon was going to be canceled, but true to the land of enchantment most of the snow melted before the race start, all three legs of the race was a GO. It was only 24 degrees at the start of the race. There were icy patches on the run and bike. A fellow triathlete who was ahead of me on the run fell twice, apparently it didn’t affect him that badly because he still finished ahead of me on both the run and bike. It wasn’t until the second transition that I was able to get ahead of him.

Today I wasn’t expecting much of a performance. My legs were still fatigued from racing Ironman Arizona 14 days ago, and my time trial bike was destroyed back in September, so I was racing on my slow heavy off brand road bike. Somehow, someway I still ended up having a great race. I finished in 1:23:18, 8th place out of 98 triathletes, I took 1st place in the 35-39 age group division, and I qualified for the 2012 US national Age Group Championships that will be held on August 18th in Burlington Vermont!!!!

My buddy Matt Hall took 2nd place in the 35-39 age group and 11th overall. He laid a smack down on the bike making up the 2 minute lead I put on him during the run. He was right on my tail coming into T-2! I put a good 45 seconds on him in T-2- it’s a good thing I get naked quick. I was able to extend that lead in the water to 1:45. My training partner Audra Macejka took 3rd place age group in her 1st triathlon ever! Great things happened at the Nutcracker triathlon today!

My wife and I need to spend some time in prayer on whether we can afford the time away from my work, my wife’s college study, and the expenses that would be needed to drive the 5 of us Hanson's all the way to Burlington Vermont so that I could compete in the 2012 USAT National Age Group Championships. It’s been a dream of mine for quite awhile to qualify and compete in the Age group and sprint distance national championships, but that would be a very long and expensive drive with 5 of us in a minivan. All of our babies all under the age of 7. I'll let you know what we decided as soon as we figure it out. Thanks for tuning in!!!

Cold weather racing at the upcoming Nutcracker triathlon

A small storm hit New Mexico last night so a lot of the day watch staff called in sick to work at the prison, I was given a mandatory 16 hour shift. I'm not complaining at all, I'm glad for the overtime money with Christmas coming. Overtime is one of the perks of working at the State Penn.

I got off work this morning at 10 AM then slept for 4 hours, I didn't want to sleep more than that or it would disrupt my sleep tonight. I need to rest up for tomorrow, I'll be competing in the Nutcracker triathlon in the morning, a local sprint distance race. It's currently snowing & the weather forecast for the race start is 27 degrees. Weather.com claims it will feel like 24 degrees. There's 200 athletes registered for this race, so apparently I'm not the only person out there who is tri-nuts or tri-tarded and willing to race in sub freezing temperatures.

The last couple years I raced in December in below freezing temps I wore gloves, racing shorts, and a shirt. Now that I'm at a much lower body weight I cant tolerate the cold like I could when I was heavier. I'll be adding a wind breaker to my race garb. Any more clothes than that and it would slow me down too much in transition!

I'll post a race report early next week. Thanks for tuning in!

why I run

"We run, not because we think it is doing us good, but because we enjoy it and cannot help ourselves. The more restricted our society and work become, the more necessary it will be to find some outlet for this craving for freedom. No one can say, 'You must not run faster than this, or jump higher than that.' The human spirit is indomitable."

triathlon off season

I told myself this year I was going to take a proper off season. I've made that decision every year and have never once been able to stop myself from training through the off season. At most I'm able to take a couple weeks off, and then my OCD takes over and I'm back at it as hard as ever.

I took an entire week off and am now half a week into my off season strength training program and I'm already miserable. I want to be out running and biking!

This morning I found a motivational quote:
“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a lion or gazelle - when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”

This quote motivated me so much I put my run shoes on and was half way out the door before I came to my senses. I realize to meet my Iron distance dreams of going sub 13 hours next year I have to start the training program well rested both physically and mentally. I have to prepare myself for a stellar training program or I'll fail. Part of next seasons training program starts now in my off season.

I'll be atempting to break my dream time of 13 hours at the Redman full Iron on Sept 22nd 2012.
"If you ever get a second chance in life for something, you've got to go all the way."
- Lance Armstrong
