The 2013 Nutcracker triathlon race report

After virtually no swimming. cycling, or running training for over 2 years I decided to sign up for the 2013 Nutcracker triathlon. This was my 86th multisport race and was the 4th time I've raced The Nutcracker triathlon. The Nutcracker triathlon used to be called the Jingle Bell triathlon, but due to a copy right problem with another race they changed the name.

The Nutcracker triathlon is RD’d by Mark Mico of Trisportcoaching.com  Every time I race a multisport event put on by Mark Mico I’m amazed. His events are always extremely well organized and stress free events. The race results were posted online by the evening of the race. He always hands out the nicest age group awards of any local sprint. This year each and every athlete who placed top 3 in their AG received a wood plaque that had “The Nutcracker triathlon 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place division” on it. The registration fees of his events are always much cheaper than any other sprint distance races.

It was a Run-Bike-Swim at the Rio Rancho Aquatic Center. The bike course was an out-and-back (moderately hilly) 20K. The run was a hilly loop 5K course. The swim was a serpentine 400 meter swim, up/down one lane at a time.

Because of my lack of endurance training and because of my current weight my run was horrible. I'm slow and to be honest I was humiliated by my physique and performance. I finished the 5k in 38:34.

The bike course was shortened this year to a 20k. I felt a little stronger cycling than I did running. I passed a bunch of people and only got passed once, but I was still sad. I was mourning for the athlete I used to be. For over 2 years I finished almost every triathlon I entered in the top 10 overall. I was mourning for the way I used to look. I used to have a 6 pack, now I weigh 265 pounds. It's been so long since I was in shape and looked good I forgot how great it felt until I saw the top triathletes speed by me on their bikes in their aero position. That used to be me...... But today the bike took me 61 minutes.

I've always been a natural swimmer. I had a great swim passing many more athletes and even swimming over a few.

I finished in 1 hour 50 minutes, took 72nd out of 100 athletes, and 1st place Clydesdale.

Even though I was sore it felt great to show up on Monday at Miller weightlifting. It felt good because I was taking another step to being the top notch athlete I used to be, but in a completely new sport of Olympic weightlifting. Even though my body was fatigued from the Nutcracker triathlon yesterday I threw up some of my biggest weight yet. I'll be a great athlete again. I'll look good again. It'll take awhile, and a lot of effort, but I will. And some day I plan on outlifting my current golden carrot Barry Schroeder of CrossFit Sandstorm in Bernalillo NM

Qualified for the 2012 Age Group national championships at The NutCracker triathlon: a race report

The Nutcracker triathlon was held this morning in Rio Rancho New Mexico. It was a Run-Bike-Swim at the Rio Rancho Aquatic Center. The bike course was an out-and-back (moderately hilly) 25K. The run was a hilly loop 5K course. The swim was a serpentine 400 meter swim, up/down one lane at a time.

The Nutcracker triathlon was RD’d by Mark Mico. Every time I race a multisport event put on by Mark Mico I’m amazed.

The night before the Nutcracker triathlon a storm covered New Mexico in a fine sheet of snow. With all the snow and ice that had dropped just hours before sun came up I was afraid the bike portion of the triathlon was going to be canceled, but true to the land of enchantment most of the snow melted before the race start, all three legs of the race was a GO. It was only 24 degrees at the start of the race. There were icy patches on the run and bike. A fellow triathlete who was ahead of me on the run fell twice, apparently it didn’t affect him that badly because he still finished ahead of me on both the run and bike. It wasn’t until the second transition that I was able to get ahead of him.

Today I wasn’t expecting much of a performance. My legs were still fatigued from racing Ironman Arizona 14 days ago, and my time trial bike was destroyed back in September, so I was racing on my slow heavy off brand road bike. Somehow, someway I still ended up having a great race. I finished in 1:23:18, 8th place out of 98 triathletes, I took 1st place in the 35-39 age group division, and I qualified for the 2012 US national Age Group Championships that will be held on August 18th in Burlington Vermont!!!!

My buddy Matt Hall took 2nd place in the 35-39 age group and 11th overall. He laid a smack down on the bike making up the 2 minute lead I put on him during the run. He was right on my tail coming into T-2! I put a good 45 seconds on him in T-2- it’s a good thing I get naked quick. I was able to extend that lead in the water to 1:45. My training partner Audra Macejka took 3rd place age group in her 1st triathlon ever! Great things happened at the Nutcracker triathlon today!

My wife and I need to spend some time in prayer on whether we can afford the time away from my work, my wife’s college study, and the expenses that would be needed to drive the 5 of us Hanson's all the way to Burlington Vermont so that I could compete in the 2012 USAT National Age Group Championships. It’s been a dream of mine for quite awhile to qualify and compete in the Age group and sprint distance national championships, but that would be a very long and expensive drive with 5 of us in a minivan. All of our babies all under the age of 7. I'll let you know what we decided as soon as we figure it out. Thanks for tuning in!!!

Cold weather racing at the upcoming Nutcracker triathlon

A small storm hit New Mexico last night so a lot of the day watch staff called in sick to work at the prison, I was given a mandatory 16 hour shift. I'm not complaining at all, I'm glad for the overtime money with Christmas coming. Overtime is one of the perks of working at the State Penn.

I got off work this morning at 10 AM then slept for 4 hours, I didn't want to sleep more than that or it would disrupt my sleep tonight. I need to rest up for tomorrow, I'll be competing in the Nutcracker triathlon in the morning, a local sprint distance race. It's currently snowing & the weather forecast for the race start is 27 degrees. Weather.com claims it will feel like 24 degrees. There's 200 athletes registered for this race, so apparently I'm not the only person out there who is tri-nuts or tri-tarded and willing to race in sub freezing temperatures.

The last couple years I raced in December in below freezing temps I wore gloves, racing shorts, and a shirt. Now that I'm at a much lower body weight I cant tolerate the cold like I could when I was heavier. I'll be adding a wind breaker to my race garb. Any more clothes than that and it would slow me down too much in transition!

I'll post a race report early next week. Thanks for tuning in!

The Nutcracker triathlon

I registered for the Nutcracker triathlon, formerly called the Jingle Bell triathlon. The Nutcracker triathlon will be held on Dec 4th and is a sprint distance tri. It is a chip timed Run-Bike-Swim held at the Rio Rancho Aquatic Center here in wonderful New Mexico. The bike course is an out-and-back (difficult bike course) and the run is a VERY hilly 1 loop course. The swim is a serpentine swim up/down one lane at a time. Distances: 5k run, 25k bike, 400yd swim. The Nutcracker's RD is Mark Miko, who is one of the 2 best RD's of all time (tied with the Greer's from Lubbock TX).

This race is only 14 days after Ironman Arizona. It's probably a bad idea for me to be racing only 14 days after IMAZ, especially since the Nutcracker tri is such a difficult course. In the last few years the 2nd place 35-39 AG finisher's average time in the Nutcracker tri has been 1 hour 11 minutes to 1 hour 12 minutes. In 2008 & 2009 I raced this event & finished with a 1 hour 25 minute (4th place AG) and a 1 hour 28 minutes (3rd place AG), but I was 20-40 pounds heavier. I'm currently in better shape and lighter than I was in '08 & '09, but I'll be riding the slowest bike ever manufactured. So only time will tell how I'll finish my 1st race of the 2012 season.
